Okay I wasn't going to post this but this story has lived rent-free in my head since I was a kid and I need people to tell me I'm not insane for finding it DISTURBING.
So my older brother wasn't exactly a model student. He and his crew used to hang out at this abandoned hospital in our town. The place had a reputation as a legit haunted spot, but after the older guys started using it as their hangout, nobody dared each other to go there anymore. Just... became theirs. The inside was completely trashed, exam tools and papers just scattered everywhere, like whoever ran the clinic had bounced overnight and never looked back.
One night my brother is alone in there, walking down the hallway, when he hears a voice from one of the rooms say "please come in here."
He opens the door. It's an exam room.
And there's a cat. Just sitting on the desk in the middle of the room.
He's standing there like ??? when the cat goes "please, have a seat."
And here's where it gets unhinged. For some reason my brother just thought "oh, I should get examined" and pulled up a stool and sat down in front of the cat. He said he doesn't know why. He just did it.
The cat started asking him about his health. His symptoms. His history. And he answered. Every question. Sincerely. Like a patient.
When it was done, the cat told him: "You have a tumor in your jaw. You'll need to be hospitalized."
My brother went "uh... hospitalization is kind of difficult for me right now..."
So the cat started throwing out medical terminology. Kept pushing. Kept explaining why he needed to be admitted. And my brother was actually being CONVINCED. He was sitting there, nodding along, and eventually said "okay fine, please go ahead with the admission paperwork."
That is when one of the older guys opened the door.
From the hallway, the older guy had heard my brother's voice and thought he was talking to himself. But the rhythm was off. He kept responding to something. Like he was in a conversation. Except there was no other voice audible from outside.
So the guy opened the door and saw my brother: sitting on a stool, facing a cat, having a full medical consultation.
The second the cat saw the older guy it bolted into the dark and disappeared.
My brother snapped out of it immediately. And then he was absolutely horrified at what had just happened. He'd been sitting there getting examined by a cat. A cat had told him he needed surgery. He had AGREED.
That night nothing else happened. He went home at dawn.
After that, both of them quietly stopped going to the abandoned hospital. Didn't make a big deal of it. Just. Stopped.
Six months later my brother goes to the dentist for a toothache.
The x-ray shows a small tumor in his jaw.
The dentist compares it to old x-rays and says it looks about a year old.
I remember visiting him in the hospital as a kid. He was there for about 10 days. They cut the tumor out.
Turns out it was benign. He's been fine ever since. He actually felt grateful, said the cat had warned him, and went back to the abandoned hospital to leave a bunch of cat food.
But I cannot get over this.
Because okay yes, the cat was right about the tumor. Fine. But what if the older guy hadn't opened that door??
My brother was fully convinced. He had just agreed to be admitted. To a HOSPITAL. Run by a CAT. In an abandoned building.
What exactly was that hospitalization supposed to be.
What would have happened to him.
The cat knowing about the tumor doesn't comfort me at all. It makes it worse. It makes it so much worse.
