horror story: the footsteps that follow you on Gokgyo Stream path, Asan

I wasn't going to post this but.

Gokgyo Stream embankment path. Asan city, South Chungcheong province. There's a thing people say about that road: walk it alone at night and you'll hear footsteps behind you, keeping exact pace. Turn around. Nobody's there.

Fall 2023, I got a job at a small agency near Onyang Hot Springs in Asan. My apartment was close to Gokgyo Stream so I walked the embankment path to work every day, about 20 minutes each way. At first it was actually nice. Fresh air, pretty scenery. I liked it.

Then late October happened.

One night I stayed late and it was past 10pm by the time I headed home. The streetlights on that path are sparse. Like, genuinely spread out. It was dark and there was nobody around. I'm walking and then.

Another set of footsteps.

Right behind me.

I told myself I was imagining it. But then I stopped walking. The footsteps stopped. I started again, they started again. Same rhythm. Same distance. Right. Behind. Me.

I turned around.

Nothing. Just the empty path stretching back into the dark.

But the air was cold in a wrong way. Not night-breeze cold. Wrong cold.

I ran home.

A few days later I mentioned it to a senior coworker and she just. her face went stiff. She goes "you heard it too. I used to hear it all the time. there are rumors about that path."

And then she told me. A few years back, a woman went missing after walking that road at night. Her last phone call, she said she thought someone was following her. CCTV footage only showed her. Alone.

After that I started walking home with earphones in, music playing. You know, the classic don't-acknowledge-the-void strategy.

Except. The music kept cutting out. Specifically in THAT section of the path. Bluetooth disconnecting, audio files just stopping. Every single time.

One night the music cut and in the silence I heard something from my phone.

A low whisper.

"walk... with me..."

I was gone. Sprinting. Never walked that road again.

Not long after, someone posted this on the local community board:

"don't walk the Gokgyo Stream path in the evenings. you'll keep hearing footsteps. do NOT look back. because the moment you do... whatever's been following you starts getting closer."
