horror story: the thing under shelf #4 that keeps coming back

I wasn't going to post this but it's been three years and I still think about it.

Summer 2022. My dad needed surgery so I took over his hardware store in Beomcheon-dong, Busan for a few days. Family business, been running for 30 years. The place was old and kind of a mess, stuff stacked everywhere, and this one spot, shelf #4 in the corner, was always buried under dust and cobwebs.

Dad had always said the same thing about it: "Don't touch that shelf. Just leave it alone."

I figured it was just some old-man superstition. Like a quirk. Whatever.

Then one day a customer walks in and literally stops and goes "what's that? there's something under there."

I crouch down to look. There's a beat-up wooden box sitting there. Which. I had DEFINITELY thrown that thing out during my morning clean. Like I specifically remember moving it.

So I open it.

Inside: old rusty nails. a scrap of cloth with what looked like dried blood on it. and a small doll. sewn together from yellowed fabric. no eyes.

The fluorescent light started flickering the moment I touched it.

I felt sick. Stuffed the whole box in a trash bag and threw it out. Done.

That night I'm sleeping in the upstairs unit above the shop and I have a dream.

In the dream I'm kneeling in front of shelf #4. My hands are moving but I'm not moving them. I'm sewing something with black thread. The doll. I'm sewing eyes onto the doll.

And someone whispers right in my ear.

"Put it back. you have to put it back."

I woke up drenched in sweat. Went downstairs.

The box was back under shelf #4.

This kept happening. I threw the box out, the box came back. I burned the doll, it came back. Every single morning. And the doll started... changing. Eyes appeared. Then a mouth. Then the arms got longer somehow.

And one afternoon under the fluorescent light I watched the corner of its mouth. move. just slightly. just enough.

I shut the store down. Told my dad everything.

He didn't say anything for a long moment. Just took the store keys and quietly said:

"That shelf... that's where your uncle used to sit. Before he went missing. He'd be there every day, sewing something."

The hardware store in Beomcheon-dong has had a "reopening soon" sign on the door ever since. Hasn't opened.

And apparently if you peek through the window at shelf #4, you'll have strange dreams that night.

that's what people are saying anyway.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
