Okay so I wasn't going to post this but I need to get it out.
Last Chuseok I went home to visit family in Yeongwol. Here's the thing about me: I have this rule where every time I go back to my hometown during holidays, I spend the night by the graves. Like literally. I don't sleep, I just... sit there. Yeah I know it sounds insane. No real reason, just how it is. And yeah, it's made me stupid brave.
Context: I'm a freshly discharged UDT operator (Korean special forces). So like. My nerves are SHOT. Or like... not shot. The opposite. I've seen things that would make normal people quit. Anyway.
So last Chuseok at around 1am, everyone's asleep. I grab a flashlight and just walk up into the mountains solo. It's pitch black. Can't see a meter in front of me. I'm smoking, just vibing, been walking maybe 30 minutes when I feel something.
There's someone 8 meters ahead.
I shine my light and it's this old lady. Has to be close to 80. White clothes, hunched over a cane. I'm like "where are you going this late" and she just says something vague and keeps walking. I'm lowkey worried for her in this darkness but whatever.
I keep going up. The slope gets INSANE. Like 70 degrees. I'm using my hands to climb. Eventually it levels out and I find a grave. I sit down to rest, smoking, and suddenly I feel like something's watching me from behind. Flash my light. Nothing.
I think fuck it, I'll sleep here. Close my eyes, lean back, and my arm hits something rough. I flash my light.
The old lady is standing right next to me.
But her face is different. No expression. Like... nothing. And she just walks past me. Straight up a 70-degree slope. In absolute darkness. Using a cane. Into terrain that took me forever to climb.
I watch her disappear and think... that's weird.
Five minutes later I follow the path she took because I'm curious and—
It's a cliff.
Like a literal sheer drop. The mountain just ends. There's a river down there. No path. Where the fuck did she go?
No sound of falling. Nothing.
I start heading down and I'm freaking out now. The branches I marked on the way up? Gone. Like they grew back or something. The stars I could see before? Completely vanished. I have military navigation training. I can find my way blindfolded. But there's nothing. No orientation. No stars. No path.
I just start pushing through the dark, making my own way down, when suddenly I hear footsteps behind me. Fast. Coming.
I spin around and flash my light.
There's a woman in white. Different woman. Looks maybe early 30s. And her legs are turned backwards. 180 degrees. Her torso is facing me but her legs are pointing the other direction. Her arms are... not attached.
I didn't think. I just ran.
But there's no path. It's getting steeper. I'm losing balance, leaning hard to not fall, and then I feel a push from behind in the darkness. Not a person. A PUSH.
I tumble down the slope. Hard. Rolling, protecting my head, hitting trees. Military training kicks in. I'm not hurt. But I hear laughing.
Not human laughter. The pitch is wrong. The frequency is wrong. It doesn't sound like a voice.
That's when I like... snapped out of it. Started telling myself: this is a dream. I'm dreaming. Ghosts can't touch you. They can't actually hurt you if you keep your mind. You survive if you stay conscious.
I found my way down eventually. Got back around 5am.
I didn't sleep.
I'm not explaining this right and I know how it sounds. But that happened.
