Japanese Urban Legend: The Grudge of Goume Onna

okay so this is a Japanese ghost story and I need you to bear with me because it goes PLACES.

Tokyo at night looks pretty. All those lights. But tucked somewhere in the outskirts there's this one village, and in that village there's an abandoned shrine that nobody visits anymore. And I mean nobody. The place is just. rotting.

Legend says a spirit called Goume Onna lives there. She was gorgeous when she was alive, got completely betrayed by the man she loved, and died horribly. Now she wanders the shrine at night looking like a nightmare, harassing anyone who gets close. (spoiler: she's not friendly.)

So this college student Takashi hears about her and is like "yeah let's go check that out" because he's that guy. He drags his friends Hiro and Akira along. They all think it'll be fun. They are wrong.

They show up late at night and the shrine is SO much worse than expected. Crumbling roof tiles. Moss-covered stone steps. The whole vibe is screaming GO HOME and they do not go home.

They walk in. Immediately a cold wind hits them and there's this sound mixed in it. like a moan. Hiro goes "is that... Goume Onna??" in a shaky voice and they all just. keep walking in. because apparently none of them have seen a horror movie.

The floors are creaking. Old paper lanterns on the walls. Every step they take the shadows on the walls move wrong.

Takashi gets brave and goes up to the altar in the center. There's an old mirror there, covered in dust. He wipes it.

His own face stares back at him.

And then RIGHT NEXT TO HIS FACE a woman's face appears. completely twisted. horrifying.

"AAAAGH" he stumbles back screaming. The others look. Goume Onna vanishes from the mirror but the bad energy? still there. They decide okay we're leaving. Except the exit is just. gone. The shrine won't let them out.

Then they hear footsteps. slow. getting closer.

A woman in white.

walking toward them.

muttering "why... why did you leave me..."

Goume Onna reaches out and grabs Hiro's arm. He's screaming, thrashing, but her grip is INSANE. "don't leave me" she whispers at him. And his body starts going cold.

Takashi and Akira try to pull him free. can't. Hiro's face goes slack. still. They have to leave him and run, except they still can't find the exit, and I'm sorry but this is where Akira randomly finds her DIARY just sitting there which okay fine.

The diary explains everything. Betrayed by someone she loved. Killed herself. Couldn't rest. Been haunting the shrine ever since with unfinished grief.

Takashi reads it and suddenly remembers a detail from the legend: she buried a necklace she loved somewhere in the shrine. Her most precious thing.

They tear the place apart and find it in an old wooden box.

Takashi holds the necklace up and prays. "Goume Onna. we understand your pain. please rest now."

She fades. disappears.

Hiro gasps. his body warms up. he's breathing.

The exit appears.

They stumble out just as dawn breaks. Takashi looks back at the shrine one last time.

Nothing. Just silence.
