okay so this is a Korean 괴담 (ghost story) that was posted on a blog and I translated it because the vibe was genuinely creepy. buckle up.
---
Somewhere in a small European village there's this old castle the locals call "The Castle of Shadows." centuries ago it belonged to some noble family. now it's just. rotting. empty. wrong.
people in the village don't go near it. like ever. because sometimes you hear whispers coming from inside, and sometimes you see shadow figures moving around in there, and that's a NO from literally everyone.
the legend goes like this: Duke Antonio, the original lord of the castle, made a deal with a demon to get rich and powerful. and it WORKED. he got insanely wealthy. the catch? he sold his soul AND the souls of every single one of his descendants. his whole bloodline just... died off one by one in horrific ways. family gone. castle abandoned. curse still very much active.
then one day this young historian named Elina shows up from the city. she wants to investigate the legend and expose whatever's actually going on in there. the villagers warn her. she doesn't care. she's built different apparently.
so on a cloudy afternoon she just walks up to the castle. the gate is rusted and ancient. she pushes it open anyway.
inside: dust, cobwebs, silence. she lights a candle and starts exploring.
the deeper she goes the more she feels it. like something is WATCHING her. then a cold wind comes out of nowhere and her candle flickers and
"turn back... turn back..."
whispered from somewhere she can't see.
she keeps going.
she finds the library. old books everywhere. she digs through them until she finds it. a worn diary. Duke Antonio's actual diary. her hands are shaking when she opens it.
the diary has EVERYTHING. the demon deal, the curse, all the suffering he caused, and how much he regretted it. and at the very end, a way to break the curse: destroy the demon's altar hidden in the deepest part of the castle.
so she goes down. into the basement. which is obviously way darker and the whispers are louder now. "turn back... turn back..." from every direction.
she finds the altar. black stone, demon imagery carved all over it. she picks up a hammer.
that's when the shadow figures show up trying to stop her. screaming at her in tortured voices. "LEAVE THIS PLACE. THE CURSE CANNOT BE BROKEN."
she swings anyway.
the altar cracks. the shadows SHRIEK. and then they're gone.
when the altar finally shatters completely, the whispers stop. all of them. the shadows are gone. the castle feels... quiet. actually quiet. not the creepy kind.
Elina walks out with the diary. the whole village is waiting. they celebrate. she explains everything about Duke Antonio and the deal and the curse.
and then she leaves.
the castle stays. but it's not scary anymore.
