(Summer Horror) The Smile

I wasn't going to post this but it actually happened to me so.

I was waiting on the train platform. Not many people around. Maybe 5 meters away there was this couple, standing just inside the yellow safety line like everyone else. They were chatting, laughing. The girl was really cute and honestly I was just kind of jealously zoning out watching them. You know how it is.

Then a train started coming through. Not my train. A through-train, meaning it wasn't stopping, it was just passing at full speed.

My eyes naturally drifted toward it. But the couple was on that side so they were still in my peripheral vision.

And right as the train passed in front of them.

The girl looked at her boyfriend. Full smile on her face. And jumped.

There was this sound. This HARD sound, like something solid hitting something solid. Then the train screaming to a stop with brakes that were way too late because it was a through-train going full speed. It didn't stop until it was completely past the station.

I didn't look at the tracks. I couldn't. But I could see enough to know.

The boyfriend was just standing there. Not moving. Not making a sound.

I genuinely could not process what I just saw. They were talking and laughing. She was smiling. She was SMILING when she jumped. Not a grimace, not a scream. A smile.

Station staff came running. One of them came up to me.

"Excuse me, did you witness the accident?"

I could barely get out a "yes."

They guided me to the station office to wait for police. A few minutes later two staff members brought the boyfriend in, practically holding him up. His face was completely white. They took him to the back and I couldn't see him anymore, but I could hear him making these low sounds.

When the police arrived they asked me to walk them through what happened. I told them everything. She jumped herself, no one pushed her, definitely not the boyfriend. I was clear about that. But I also told them about the smile.

The cop just went "yes, thank you" and moved on like I'd said something totally normal.

That bothered me so I asked.

"Is this... is this how it usually is? With these cases?"

And the cop said not always, but sometimes. He said there are people who show zero warning signs and then just suddenly do it. Completely calm. Bright even. Like they're going for a walk. He said there's no way to stop them because there's nothing to catch.

Maybe once someone truly decides, there's a kind of relief that takes over? Or maybe...

I don't know. But the way she moved. The way she just stepped forward. It didn't look like a decision. It looked like something was pulling her in.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
