The ghost that showed up in a student film assignment

Okay I wasn't going to post this but it's been eating at me so here we go.

I used to work as a teacher's assistant at a film production school. First-year students had this recurring assignment: go out, shoot a short video on whatever theme the instructor assigned, bring it back next class. And the instructor always gave the same theme for the very first assignment.

"Dead streets."

The whole point was to teach students how to take a vague client brief and turn it into something concrete. Like if someone says "dead streets," the correct read is: find a declining neighborhood, shoot footage of empty roads, no people, that kind of thing.

But these were first-years. Like, fresh off the street amateurs who'd only been in school a few months. So the stuff they turned in was... a lot. Dead bugs. One kid made a whole dramatic monologue about someone committing suicide. You know. Chaotic.

But one video in the pile was different.

This student had filmed inside the school's annex building at dusk, walking through the hallways with the camera, narrating stuff like "a woman died here, they say her ghost still appears" in this creepy found-footage style. It was weird and weirdly watchable. The video goes through the whole building floor by floor, and at the very end, on the top floor, after delivering one final ghost story, the camera suddenly shifts angles and just... holds on the window near the ceiling. Static shot. And then.

There's a woman pressed against the outside of the window.

Both hands flat on the glass.

The instructor and I lost it. Like genuinely we were both impressed. It was getting dark outside, the camera was focused elsewhere so her face was blurry, and somehow that made it SO much scarier. The whole "talk about ghosts and a ghost appears" thing, executed perfectly. We thought this kid was a genius.

So next class I pulled the student aside to chat about it. Off-theme maybe but the video was genuinely interesting.

And then mid-conversation I noticed something was off.

He had no idea there was a woman in the window.

Like. None. He said yeah he shot the ghost-story walkthrough, but at the end he'd just set the camera down when he was done talking. Forgot to hit stop. So the camera kept rolling while he packed up his stuff, and only realized it was still on when he was about to leave. He didn't know how to edit yet, didn't know how to cut the footage or layer anything over it, so he just... submitted it as-is.

I figured he was trolling me. So I said "come on, that's your girlfriend right? How'd she feel about standing up that high?"

He got mad. Like actually upset. So we went to the editing room and watched it together.

I pointed at the window. "Look. Right there."

He went completely white.

"I didn't film that. I don't know what that is. I DON'T KNOW."

And then he left. Just walked out and went home.

I stayed in the editing room by myself, still half convinced he was just committing to the bit. Smiling, rewinding, watching it again.

And then it hit me.

If you calculate the size of that classroom window in the frame... her face would have to be at least 70 centimeters across.

Seventy. Centimeters.

I turned the monitor off and ran.

Worked there for a while after that. Never saw anything that messed up again.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
