The motel that changed its sign (legendary creepy story)

I wasn't going to post this but here we go.

Late summer night, the city was packed, and nowhere had rooms. One place. Two places. Three places. All full. I was genuinely starting to think okay so we're just sleeping outside tonight.

Then the fourth spot had a room. BRAVO. We asked the price and it was weirdly cheap, like suspiciously cheap, and we just grabbed the key before they could change their minds and basically sprinted to the elevator. "God hasn't abandoned us" we said. Lmao we really said that.

We rinsed off quick and crashed hard. Best feeling ever.

Then sometime in the middle of the night my girlfriend starts tossing around and wakes me up. Half asleep I figure she needs the bathroom. Then she goes "babe... the bathroom door won't open."

I'm like half-conscious, whatever, old door, whatever. I get up and grab the handle.

And I immediately woke up.

Like. Fully. In an instant.

The handle turned fine. But the door wouldn't pull open. Not because it was stuck. It felt like someone on the other side had their full body weight pressed against it, hanging off the handle, pulling back. I could feel it. That resistance. That weight.

It was late summer but I went cold from my feet to my face in about two seconds.

She was right behind me though, and this girl is a MILLION times more scared of things than I am, so I kept my face totally blank (thank god it was dark) and just swallowed hard and pulled with everything I had.

It flew open.

Nothing. Bathroom was empty and clean.

She just gave me the "why are you being weird" look and rushed past me to use the toilet. I went in first anyway to check. Everything normal.

Except.

The sink basin. Wet. Water droplets everywhere. Like someone had literally just washed their hair in there minutes ago.

I always check bathrooms when I check in, it's a habit. We'd barely used anything. Nobody had been in there.

I filed it away and forced myself back to sleep. We had a full day planned.

Next morning. She's doing her makeup at the vanity, I'm behind her drying her hair (she has SO much hair). Dryer overheats and cuts out. I glance up.

The mirror is showing the bed behind us.

Except there's a woman on it.

Black bob haircut. Dark grey turtleneck. Sitting on the white sheets, facing the mirror. Staring directly at me.

I couldn't move. Couldn't turn my head. Couldn't scream. My whole body just... stopped working. The only thing I could do was close my eyes.

She goes "hello?? why'd you stop?? should we do dakgalbi for lunch or dinner??"

I cracked one eye open.

She was still there.

(okay normally the rule is you see a ghost, you look away, you look back, it's gone. basic ghost etiquette. she did NOT get the memo.)

Somehow I turned the dryer back on. Finished her hair. Kept my head down the whole time. Packed our stuff in record time and got the hell out.

My girlfriend kept asking if I was mad at her the whole day. I just made stuff up. We did our date. Went back to Seoul.

I'm pretty hard to scare and I see things sometimes, but making direct eye contact with something that just... stays there... that broke me a little ngl.

I kind of blocked it out. Life moved on. I almost forgot.

Then about six months later I'm browsing a motel review community and I click on a place and freeze. I recognize the building in the photo. Same place. But the name is completely different.

They changed the sign.

I clicked through to the reviews.

And that's when.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
