The Rusty Key at Midnight (Korean Horror Story)

I wasn't going to post this but. okay. buckle up.

So there's this guy, Yoonseok. Grew up in a small rural village in Gyeonggi Province, one of those places where the nights get DARK dark. One day he's cleaning out the old family house and finds this beat-up wooden box. Inside: a rusty key. And some old photos of his grandparents when they were young, plus a shot of the house itself.

Normal enough, right.

Except he has no idea what the key opens. The house had been empty for ages and nobody in the family ever talked about it. He's about to ask someone but before he even gets the chance... he has a dream that night. He's in the old house. Opens a door. Walks into the dark.

And then he wakes up and decides you know what, let me just. go find that door.

The house is basically ruins at this point. Old furniture, dust everywhere, the whole thing. He goes room by room looking for a lock that matches the key. Then he gets to this old bedroom and there it is. A hidden door in the wall. Locked. And the keyhole looks EXACTLY like it fits that rusty key.

His hands are shaking but he puts the key in.

It opens.

Behind it: a wooden staircase going down.

He goes down.

The basement smells like mold and something else he can't name. In the middle of the room there's an old wooden chest. On top of the chest, an old diary. His grandfather's handwriting. The entries are from the 1950s and the grandfather writes about hearing strange sounds from down here, sounds that got louder every night. He followed the sounds one night and found a doll deep in the basement. A doll that felt... alive.

Yoonseok closes the diary. Opens the chest.

There's a doll inside.

It's staring at him.

Like. actually staring. With these eyes that don't look right.

A cold draft passes through the basement. He picks up the doll and then.

The door slams shut.

Locked. From the outside.

He's stuck down there in the dark holding this doll and then he hears it. Small voice. Coming from nowhere.

"Let me out..."

He spins around. Nobody there. The voice gets closer.

"Let me out..."

And then he realizes.

It's the doll.

He drops it. Runs to the door, pulls at it, nothing. And then the doll STARTS MOVING ON ITS OWN and crawls over to him and grabs his leg.

He screams. Pounds on the door.

His dad opens it.

"What's going on?" His dad sees him standing there white as a sheet, staring at the doll on the floor.

Yoonseok tells him everything. His dad sighs.

"That doll was made by your great-grandmother. Your grandfather was terrified of it so he hid it down here."

Just. that's it. That's the whole explanation apparently.

Yoonseok never went back to that house. He put the doll and the key back in the box and buried it. Deep.

But sometimes at night he still hears it in his dreams.

"Let me out..."

...

yeah I'm not sleeping tonight either, thanks
