I wasn't going to post this but I was there. Or close enough.
This was late summer of '95. I enlisted in '94 and got discharged in '96, so the timeline tracks. I got shipped to Army D Hospital after a herniated disc from training, and the moment I arrived the whole place felt OFF. Like that specific kind of quiet where something bad just happened.
So I asked around.
Apparently a soldier had been sent there for recovery a few months earlier. His friend came to visit one day. That evening during headcount, the patient was just... gone. They searched the whole base and found him behind the convenience store near the PX.
Face completely carved off. Fingertips cut away so prints couldn't be pulled. Stabbed dozens of times.
The whole hospital lost it.
The military police launched an investigation and that's when the gate guard came forward with something weird. He said some soldier was leaving after visiting hours and his hand was COVERED in blood. Guard stopped him. The guy had a deep knife wound, claimed he cut himself peeling fruit (lmaooo sure buddy), got sent to the infirmary for stitches and just... walked out.
They tracked him down. He was the victim's friend. The one who came to visit.
They sent MPs to his unit and he confessed.
Here's the thing about the motive. From middle school all the way through graduation, the victim had been brutalizing this guy. Bullying him for years. It apparently got so bad that he couldn't even sit for his college entrance exam because of what this person did to him.
So he waited.
He was on leave when a mutual friend mentioned the victim had been sent to the hospital. And something just clicked. He went and bought a knife. Showed up under the pretense of visiting. Got the victim talking, suggested they step outside for a smoke.
And that was it.
The cut on his hand happened when the victim was fighting back, trying to push him off. Just a slip.
If that cut hadn't been there. If the guard hadn't noticed. This case would have gone cold forever. No face. No fingerprints. No leads.
It almost worked.
