I wasn't going to post this but I can't stop thinking about it. This happened when I was in elementary school, so like 10 years ago. I need to be clear: I did NOT believe in ghosts or spirits. Not even a little. When friends said they experienced sleep paralysis I was literally like "that sounds cool, I want that to happen to me." I was a dumb kid.
So our next-door neighbors were this quiet family. The husband ran a car repair shop, and the wife was SO shy she could barely make eye contact with me, a literal child. We lived in this isolated neighborhood so our families were pretty close. My mom would send me over with food and the wife would just smile and give a small bow. Barely said anything. That was her whole personality: sweet, quiet, shy.
They had a daughter. I'll call her A. Seven years old, but speech was really delayed so she couldn't handle kindergarten and just stayed home. Since our neighborhood was in the middle of nowhere and I had no friends, I'd hang out with A after school. Taught her how to play 공기 (it's like a Korean jacks game), gave her some of my dolls. She was a cute kid.
Then one day I come home and my mom's like "A's mom is pregnant!" I was weirdly excited even though this had nothing to do with me lol. Ten months later, baby boy. I'll call him B.
My mom basically moved into their house to help with postpartum care since the wife had no family around. About two weeks in, my mom comes home and starts venting to my dad.
"Something is wrong with A's mom. She's muttering to herself, screaming at me out of nowhere. She's NEVER been like this."
My mom was annoyed. That's all any of us thought it was at first.
Two days later we went on a family trip to Jirisan hot springs. And this is where it gets weird. There was a woman there, not like a fortune teller or a shaman or anything, just someone who apparently... saw things. She sat down next to my mom for a second and said:
"Your energy is strong, that's good for you. But be careful of the house spirit where you live. It's the kind that kills people."
My mom FLIPPED OUT. Told her to stop saying unlucky things and basically screamed at her to go away.
A few days after that, my friend came over to hang out. We were walking in when I waved to the neighbor auntie next door.
She looked completely different.
This woman who used to go pink from shyness just WALKED INTO OUR HOUSE without saying a word. Started ransacking our fridge. Yelling "where's the food, I'm hungry, bring me rice."
My mom showed up and started yelling back, like what is happening right now.
And then the woman just... started crying. Right there in front of us.
"Unni. There's someone else inside my body."
She said it like that. And then she went from sobbing to laughing. Cackling. Her eyes rolled back.
I froze. My friend was crying next to me. It was one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen and I was like 10 years old.
My mom sent me to my room immediately.
Our family is Buddhist so my mom suggested taking the auntie to a temple. Both families went together. me, A, B, both dads, the whole group.
The monk took one look at her and immediately started hitting her with a broom, yelling "where do you think you're trying to enter."
And she did it again. Eyes rolled back. Laughing and crying.
Then she looked at the monk and said "can you see me?"
On the way home my mom mentioned something: that house. The neighbors' house. Used to be OURS. We had lived there before them.
The husband was desperate at this point. They moved. He took her to temples, churches, Catholic churches, shamans, every single one. Doctors said nothing was physically wrong with her so.
Things seemed to get better after the move. So he went back to work at the shop, calling home at least three times a day because he was still scared.
One afternoon he's on a smoke break and just gets this urge to call home.
"What's B doing?"
"He's not breathing."
She said it like she was describing the weather. Completely flat. Like she was talking about a stranger.
"What about A??"
"............"
He could hear A coughing in the background.
The shop was close to the house. He ran.
The wife was sitting there staring at the wall, completely blank.
B was on the bed. Strangled. Dead.
A had marks on her throat. She was screaming.
The mom had killed the baby and was in the middle of strangling A when the phone rang.
Then A, this child who could barely string a sentence together, pointed at her mother's shoulder when she saw her dad.
"The uncle who was sitting here hurt B."
"A, what uncle?"
"The uncle who was sitting on mom's shoulder. He did this to me too." And she mimed being choked.
The auntie was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after that.
A is okay now, growing up fine.
But if you ask her about the uncle her eyes go somewhere else and she stops talking.
