We pulled something out of the ground at school. It had a neck.

Okay I wasn't going to post this but it's been eating at me and I need people to know this actually happened.

Elementary school. Swimming class day. Me and my friend got excused from the pool for whatever reason and got stuck pulling weeds behind the gym. Super boring, just chatting and half-assing it, when my friend suddenly calls me over.

I go look.

Growing in the middle of the weeds there was this... black grass? Except it wasn't grass. It was hair. Just a little tuft of black hair poking out of the dirt like a plant.

We probably should've walked away. We did not walk away.

We played rock paper scissors to decide who had to touch it. I lost. So I grabbed the hair, took a breath, and yanked.

It came out easy. Way too easy.

The bottom of the hair was tied together. And underneath the tie... there was a neck. A human neck. Shriveled up, dried out, about the size of an onion. No eyes, no nose, no mouth you could make out, just this wrinkled desiccated little HEAD that had been BURIED IN THE GROUND LIKE A TURNIP.

We screamed. Absolute feral screaming. Started yelling for our teacher.

The only person who came running was another girl who'd been pulling weeds nearby. She took one look at the neck, burst into tears, and sprinted away. Which honestly made us lose it too, and now all three of us are sprinting and crying.

We found a PE teacher from another class on the field and told him everything. He didn't even wait for us to finish before he started running toward the pool area.

We all got back to the spot. Me, my friend, the girl, the teacher.

The neck was gone.

Five minutes. FIVE MINUTES had passed. Just... gone. All that was left was the hole in the dirt where we'd pulled it out, and a few strands of hair.

The teacher obviously thought we made it up, because apparently me and my friend had a reputation. But the girl who saw it was like, class president, top grades, totally credible, and she backed up our story. So he believed us.

Every teacher came out at lunch to search the area. Found nothing. Eventually they took the hair to the police.

Nothing ever came of it. Cold case. Just. Gone.

But three of us saw it. That part isn't up for debate.

Okay so here's where it gets genuinely insane.

Few years later I start dating this woman who's six years older than me. Turns out she went to the same elementary school. Same building, same area, everything.

We're doing the whole "tell me about your childhood" thing one night and I bring up the neck story.

She goes. "wait. people are still talking about that?"

I stared at her.

She told me that when SHE was in elementary school, there was an urban legend going around. That somewhere in the bushes near the pool, there was a freshly severed head buried in the ground.

I said. I said. "I pulled that out of the ground with my own hands."

Her face went completely white.

"...you mean it was real?"

Yeah. Still don't know what it was. Nobody does. And honestly I don't know if I want to.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
