Whispers from the closet wall in my Gangneung house [horror story]

I wasn't going to post this but.

Spring 2021. I decided to leave Seoul and move to Gangneung. I was burned out on city life and just wanted to exist somewhere quiet near the ocean. So I started scrolling real estate sites and found this standalone house listed way below market price. Ten minutes from Gyeongpodae beach, two stories, clearly old. The price was suspicious. Like, suspiciously suspicious. The agent just said "the previous owner emigrated suddenly, so it's a quick sale" and left it at that. I signed the contract. Moved in early April.

The house was actually pretty clean. Some old furniture left behind. Fine.

Except. In the second floor master bedroom, inside the closet, there was this small iron door built into the back wall. The agent waved it off. "Old coal boiler duct from back in the day. It's sealed up, don't worry about it."

Two weeks in, the whispering started.

Every night. This thin sound, like wind but not wind.

"O... pen... o... pen... here..."

It was coming from the closet. First I told myself I was just tired, hallucinating, whatever. But it got CLEARER. Every night it got clearer.

So I broke the rusted lock and opened the iron door.

The space inside was tiny. Barely big enough for one adult to fit. The walls were covered in what looked like scratch marks, like someone had clawed at them with their fingernails, over and over and over. And on the floor there was a single yellowed photograph.

A couple and a little girl. Looked like the 70s. On the back, in faded handwriting:

"April 17th, 1975. Our family, in our new Gangneung home."

After that the air in the house just felt... wrong. Heavy. The whispering continued every night without fail, and mold started spreading around the closet wall in patterns I couldn't explain.

About a month later I finally asked an elderly neighbor about the house. Guy was in his 70s, had clearly been around long enough to know things.

He went still when I described it.

"Three people lived here in the late 70s. A husband, wife, and daughter. The husband... in a rage... locked the wife and daughter inside that room. Both of them. And he starved them to death."

He said every person who'd moved in since had experienced something wrong. The house had been empty for over a decade. The real estate agency had just quietly listed it cheap to get rid of it.

I left that same day.

I've heard the house is still standing on the outskirts of Gangneung. If you bring it up near Gyeongpo beach, locals just go quiet and shake their heads.

I'll never go back. But on rainy nights sometimes I still hear it.

"O... pen... o... pen... here..."

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
