Whispers in the Night (horror story)

I wasn't going to post this but here's a horror story that genuinely got under my skin.

So there's this old apartment complex smack in the middle of the city. During the day it looks totally normal. But at night? Something just felt OFF. Wrong in a way you can't explain. People had been leaving one by one, and by the time this story takes place, more than half the units were empty.

But Yunhee couldn't leave. Too many memories there. Her whole family history was in those walls.

She came home late from work one night, dragging herself to the elevator. And right as she got on she caught something moving at the end of the dark hallway. She was SO exhausted she just chalked it up to tired eyes and got in anyway.

Made it to the 12th floor. Stepped inside. Felt safe for exactly two seconds.

She closed the front door and the apartment was just. quiet. Too quiet. She turned on the living room light, sat on the couch, tried to chill. Couldn't shake this gross unsettled feeling though. Everything looked like it was in place but something was wrong. She just couldn't figure out what.

She went to wash her face in the bathroom, splashed water on, felt slightly better. Then looked up at the mirror and her own reflection seemed off somehow. She stared at it for a moment, couldn't figure out why, then walked back out.

Flipped through TV channels for a while. Nothing. Turned it off, picked up a book instead. Got absorbed for a bit.

And then she heard a sound.

She put the book down. Listened. The sound was getting closer, like someone walking around in the other room. She made herself get up and slowly moved toward it.

Went into the room, turned the light on. Nothing there.

And then the sound came from the living room. Louder this time.

She went back. And there, in the middle of the living room floor, was a doll. HER doll. A childhood toy she hadn't seen in years, covered in dust like it had been sitting somewhere untouched forever.

She picked it up. Tried to remember. Had no idea how it got there.

She set it down and sat on the couch. That's when the TV turned on by itself. Screen flickering. She grabbed the remote and tried to turn it off, nothing worked, it just kept going.

And then a face appeared on the screen.

A woman. A stranger. Staring directly at Yunhee. Slowly smiling.

Yunhee said every hair on her body stood up. She kept hitting the remote, the face just got clearer. Clearer. Until the woman opened her mouth and said:

"You can't leave this place."

Yunhee ripped the power cord out of the wall. TV went dark. But the feeling in that room. it didn't go away.

She grabbed her stuff and left immediately.

The hallway was dark and dead silent. She was waiting for the elevator when she saw it again. Something moving at the end of the hall. But this time she could tell. It was a person.

She got in the elevator, rode down to the first floor, stepped outside, tried to breathe.

And then she heard footsteps behind her.

She turned around.

The woman from the TV was standing right there. No expression. Just walking slowly toward her.

Yunhee ran.

She was trying to get out of the complex but her legs felt like concrete. The woman kept coming. Yunhee zigzagged through streets until she ended up in an empty lot somewhere, stopped to catch her breath.

Looked around. Woman was gone.

She almost relaxed. Almost.

Something cold touched her from behind.

She turned. The woman was right there. Right behind her.

The woman reached out and wrapped her hands around Yunhee's throat. Yunhee fought back but the strength just drained out of her. She lost consciousness slowly, and the last thing she heard was a whisper:

"Now you can't leave either."

She collapsed.

She never got up.

After that the complex went quiet again. Weird things kept happening there. More people left. But the ones who stayed, every single night, felt that same dread they couldn't name.

It never went away.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
