3 wild stories from my time in the Korean military police

okay so I was stationed with the military police (헌병대) under the Ministry of Defense, and for some reason our base had this reputation. not like, urban legend stuff passed down through generations. I mean active duty guys talking about things they personally saw and experienced. apparently a LOT of people died there during the old coup era, military police included, and some guys think that's why. I'm honestly a skeptic so take this all with salt. but here's what actually happened, facts only.

**Story 1: the one that happened to me personally**

so our unit had both outdoor guard posts and indoor duty shifts. I pulled an indoor night shift one time and I was the only person on that entire floor. to save on electricity they only kept the lights on right around my area, and the far end of the hallway was pitch black. I could not see anything down there.

anywho. solo night shift, nothing going on, I'm like. yeah. I was COMPLETELY passed out in my chair with my uniform half undone like a goblin. and then suddenly, out of nowhere, this high-pitched voice (couldn't even tell if it was male or female) SCREAMED in my ear.

야!!!!!!!!!

I shot up so fast. and for some reason, even though I was still shaking, something felt wrong about being sloppy so I fixed my whole uniform, put my helmet on properly, and just stood there staring at the wall like an idiot.

and then. the elevator opens. an officer walks out doing a surprise inspection round. and just... walks past me.

if he'd caught me sleeping I would've been absolutely cooked. I don't know what that voice was but I was genuinely SO grateful to it. and that floor specifically? before I got discharged it happened to me three more times. always that floor. never anywhere else on base.

later when we were all getting close to discharge and trading stories, other guys from my platoon said the same thing happened to them on that floor too.

believe it or not I'm just telling you what happened.

**Story 2: the one I heard from a buddy in the next platoon over**

this one's not mine. my buddy's platoon had outdoor posts and they rotated in a group of like 8 guys together (different setup from my solo indoor thing).

so they finish their evening shift and they're all gathering to head back. but one guy just. won't move. he's still standing (or sitting?) at his post, not responding. one of the senior soldiers keeps calling out to him, bro COME ON, let's go, nothing. guy doesn't budge.

so everyone's kind of watching this happen and then they do a headcount and... they're all there. every single person who was supposed to come back is accounted for.

the guy at the post had vanished. just gone.

and here's the creepy part: nobody else could see anything at that post. only the senior soldier who kept calling out to him could see someone standing there.

(that senior was apparently the type who'd go OFF on people for messing up, so everyone was pretty reluctant to talk about this openly. make of that what you will.)

**Story 3: the chopstick incident (this one's just funny/terrifying)**

by the time I got to my last few months I had a section leader who was only 2 weeks more senior than me, so I basically operated as a ghost. dark templar mode. I'd just quietly eat meals with my small circle and mind my business.

but this one day I had to take the new recruits to the cafeteria because I was somehow the only senior person around. so off we go, like 10 of us, just eating peacefully.

and then our unit commander (one-star general, newly appointed, genuinely known for actually caring about enlisted guys) walks in for a SURPRISE inspection of the cafeteria.

he starts asking us if there's any hazing or unfair treatment going on. mentions laughing that back in the day they used to ban chopsticks as some kind of power move. and he's scanning down the whole table while he says this.

I was the only person holding chopsticks.

everyone else had only brought spoons that day. completely by accident. the recruits started explaining that there was no rule, they just happened to grab spoons, which was true, but the timing. the TIMING.

I still get chills thinking about it.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
